Mt. Rogers, the highest mountain in Virginia, is located in the SW corner of the state. Though its summit is wooded, the 'Balds' that comprise its ridge system are the northernmost in the Appalachian chain. To the south loom the 'big' mountains of North Carolina. To the west, a thousand feet lower, is the Iron Mountain ridge. The Virginia piedmont falls away to the east. The unobstructed views from Mt. Rogers are spectacular and numerous hiking trails make them easily accessible. These paintings were done over several pleasant days of hiking in the area with a daypack and a French easel. Mt. Rogers has been favorite since I first discovered it while hiking the Appalachian Trail more than thirty years ago. In the 80's, back when winters actually had snow, I did a cross-country ski tour of Rogers and the Iron mountain loop in complete solitude - different story today.
